Curriculum
Reading and Language Arts
We believe that the development and integration of reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening skills are critical for a student's success in all areas of the curriculum. Mindful of individual needs and learning styles, the Reading/Language Arts program should provide opportunities for students to utilize their communication skills in a functional, meaningful manner.
Math
We believe that Mathematics is an integral part of all curriculum areas. We believe that mathematical instruction should involve relevant issues, real-life situations, current technology, and hands-on experiences. We believe that mathematical instruction should cultivate creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and accommodate individual learning styles.
Science
We believe that Science should actively engage all students in the exploration of the natural world. By observing, communicating, comparing and organizing, and relating, students will learn to make reasoned decisions, and take relevant action.
Social Studies
We believe that Christian people should make a positive contribution within a local community and global society. In our Social Studies program, students will examine historical and current events, as well as global, environmental and social justice issues. Based on the developmental levels, needs and concerns of the students, our Social Studies program utilizes a broad range of teaching strategies, learning activities and resources. Our Social Studies program will provide opportunities for students to think critically, appreciate the diversity of humanity, and function as responsible individuals within our changing world.
Religion
We believe that our Catholic faith guides and directs our words and actions, and is imbued in all areas of our curriculum. Our formal Religion and Family Life programs support our mission statement, and help to bolster our students' commitment to their faith and their community. Through the examination and discussion of the precepts of our Catholic faith, we strive to develop each child's sense of self-worth, and his/her responsibility to self and others. We endeavor to instill in each child a respect for the diversity within our community, and the desire to work for peace and justice in the global community.
Physical Education
We believe that Physical Education is an integral part of Catholic education - promoting fitness; cooperation; lifetime activities and opportunities to apply Christian values into a competitive discipline. The Physical Education program provides an environment where there are equal opportunities for: individual and group participation; self-improvement; experiencing success; building a positive self-image; building confidence; building self-esteem; and developing social skills. All students will be guided to a level of physical fitness appropriate to individual needs and abilities. Through the rules, strategies and teamwork learned in Physical Education, students will be empowered to carry Christian values into many areas of life.
We expect all students at Saint Mark's School to: move safely and efficiently through space, being aware of self and others in both indoor and outdoor environments; participate in activities in a positive, cooperative manner; demonstrate positive ways to resolve conflict; use decision-making process while participating in activities; demonstrate safety and equipment care; demonstrate appropriate competitive participation and good sportsmanship; behave in a manner which does not distract others; continue to try, despite frustration; identify activities that would enhance life-long personal fitness.
Music
We believe that Music is a means by which - utilizing singing, playing, listening, creating, moving, reading and writing - children can explore and discover on a physical, mental and spiritual level.
